"So You Want to Be in the Big Leagues"
Ken Dayley
What could a professional baseball career and a decorative finishing career possibly have in common?  The systems used to be successful.

Being a pitcher, I attempted to paint the corners of home plate for more than ten years with three different major league teams, eventually becoming one of the top left-handed relievers in baseball.  Now, considered a rookie in the decorative finishing industry, I am once again at the bottom of the food chain trying to figure out how to paint the corners in a room and advance my skills to be one of the best faux finishers in my area.

In my baseball career, like any story, the road was not always a smooth one.  There were bumps, pot holes, detours and, believe it or not, a couple of dirt roads.  At Fauxcademy, I will share some of these so-called learning experiences and how we need these to really grow.  We will unpack some of the foundational building blocks that can help any system be successful.

In his book, "The Success System that Never Fails", W. Clement Stone explains the different steps that we need to take in building a successful system.  He states, "All success swings on the three phrases below.  Once you truly understand what they mean."

1. Inspiration to action
2. Know-how
3. Activity Knowledge

I didn’t realize that in my baseball career, I took these same steps but just used different terminology.  These same ideas can be used in our decorative finish approach.

1. Passion or the love of what you are doing.  It is self motivating.
2. Developing a good foundation or base knowledge (classes, books, practice, practice, practice, etc.) 3. Experience or just doing it.  There is no replacement for experience.  It is so important that you learn both from your successes and failures.  Nike sums it up perfectly, "JUST DO IT!"  Action is what overcomes fear.

My hope is that we will understand these phrases, be more successful, and most of all, have some fun.
